Devon Broadband - Update

There is a House of Commons Debate on Thursday 19th
-
On the way to Devon?
May - this highlights the 'political will' of providing faster broadband. I
would like to see at least one Devon MP speaking up for the County in this
debate.
There will be 4 or 5 projects announced at the end of May
2011 by Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) - a new Government Quango (in type). I
have a feeling that one at least will be in Devon, the Cinderella of Broadband in
England.
BT Openreach is due to announce further fibre optic
roll-out in the Autumn (2011). With a new CEO, Olivia Garfield and the public facing plans ending March 2012. I would
not be surprised to see earlier announcements. Let's hope it is not totally cherry
picked or a grace and favour upgrading telephone exchange listing.
Devon County Council must not go
back to sleep – if that is the state of saying or doing nothing in bringing
superfast broadband to the greater part of its area. When the results of 'bidding'
for better broadband are announced, let's have a Press Release with some real
thoughts on. Not just the usual small sound bite that says or means little.
