On 22 and 24 November, volunteers from the Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton fundraising guild ran two successful annual events during gale force winds and widespread flooding.

On 22 November, the Exe Sailing Club hosted a cheese and wine evening organised by club social secretary Mary Fagan. During the evening, Vice Commodore Dave Preston handed over a cheque for £666 to Exmouth RNLI Coxswain, Tim Mock. This amount had been collected throughout the year by the sailing club. The event was attended by over 120 people, including volunteer RNLI crew (past and present), RNLI officers and sailing club members. In addition to the cheque, the life-saving charity raised £290 on the night by way of raffle and admission tickets. The souvenir stall, run by the two Margarets was very busy, taking nearly £200.

On 24 November, some of the same volunteers battled their way to neighbouring Budleigh Salterton for the annual coffee morning. Supported and sponsored by local businesses, the event was well-attended despite the on-going downpours. Within the two hours, the fundraising team raised £471.21 from sales, raffle, auction and donations. Estate Agents, Palmers Whitton & Laing kindly sponsored this event held in the Budleigh Salterton Public Hall. Money raised from both events will contribute to the launch and recovery vehicle for the new Shannon-class lifeboat expected at Exmouth RNLI towards the end of 2013.

Due to the nature of the weather and severe flood warnings in place around the river Exe, the volunteer RNLI crews have also been busy. The south west volunteer RNLI flood team were on stand-by in Exeter late on Saturday night and were stood down on Sunday morning.

At 1.25pm, Brixham coastguard tasked Exmouth inshore lifeboat, George Bearman to rescue a drifting dinghy in the river Exe. The volunteer crew located the vessel and confirmed it was unmanned and no-one was in the water. The owner was informed by the coastguard and the crew towed the yawl back to Topsham Sailing Club to hand it over to him.
