WHAT ARE EXMOUTH's top takeaways? With a diverse range of culinary dishes, from fish and chips to kebabs, pizzas, Chinese, Indian, posh sarnies, coffee and muffins, there's plenty to choose around town. Here are some of your favourites...

Fish and chips

For a seaside town, Exmouth is blessed with a number of excellent fish and chip eateries, none finer than Krispies on the Exeter Road. Winners of the 2010 South West Perfect Portion Award – presented to the shop by singing TV personality Keith Chegwin – cubbybunny describes Krispies as "the best chippy in Exmouth" and extols the virtues of their unique battered chips. AuntDahlia loves Krispies too, saying that "the wide menu offers above average fish and chips, burgers and pies". She also mentions their "efficient ticketing system that sees everyone is served as quickly as possible". Pedigree_chum is equally impressed, saying that they do their "own special batter that just can't be beaten"... High praise indeed.

In the town centre, Capels is the place to go. The café and takeaway has become an institution and is very reliable. Grapenut says, "The fish is always good and the chips are well up to scratch, too. Sometimes the queues can be long, because the fish is freshly cooked to order, but it's worth it. Definitely a tasty treat."

Chinese

If a tasty Chinese takeaway is more your thing, China Garden is reliably good. AuntDahlia says of the takeaway and restaurant, it's "Chinese food with style. The menu is a mixture of the familiar favourites (spare ribs, sweet and sour dishes, etc), with some more imaginative items, such as the Exe mussels in black bean sauce. All the food is well cooked and presented".

Indian

Here's a quandary. After Indian Ocean on Exeter Road sank without trace a couple of years ago, good-quality Indian takeaway food has been hard to recommend in Exmouth as so many of the establishments – such as The Ganges – have become variable. However new kids on the cardamom Goa Spice are picking up strong reviews. Grapenut says: "Good to have a new Indian in Exmouth, this one's a little bit different. Offering good-quality Indian and Goan food, the dishes are not doused in E numbers and food colouring. The food is lightly spiced, so you can actually taste the individual ingredients. For my money this is currently the best Indian in Exmouth. Pleasant service, too."

And up in Brixington, Chadni Express has its fans, especially as the food is good value. Keyboardman says: "The onion pakura starter makes a change from regular onion bhaji, the chicken tikka massala is reliable, the veg – such as the dall tarka – is OK, and we're rather keen on the good-value birianis." However he warns that there can be delays in home delivery, especially to Exmouth town centre.

Kebabs

No question. It's got to be Ali's on Exeter Road. AuntDahlia simply loves Ali's "spiffing kebabs", and extols their virtues to the heavens. She sends His Lordship out on a regular basis to pick up a kebab, especially one of Ali's unique combinations. Their current favourite is kofte, lamb shish, chicken shish, garlic and mint sauce, salad but no chili, all served in a large nan bread with large chips. "So, if you haven't yet sampled the delights of Ali's, do so at once," insists AuntDahlia. "The large kebabs are big enough for two, or one very greedy person!" You can't say fairer...

Coffee and muffins on the go

Most mornings you'll find The Bespoke Café Co at Exmouth Railway station. You'll also spot Matt and his trusty trike out and about at most big events around the town. According to Keyboardman, The Bespoke Café Co serves "lovely latte, marvellous muffins, super beverages and tasty snacks". He's also impressed with "Matt's innovative initiative, bringing coffee around the town, just where you want it, and without burning fossil fuels. Excellent!"

Going posh

Finally, for an upmarket takeaway treat, try Tasti Mani, the "super-duper deli" on Albion Street. "I had a fantastic toasted salami and chorizo pitta," says Mike Jep. "It was stuffed with salad so fresh it tasted like it had just been picked!" TheGreenMan is even more ecstatic, saying that Tasti Mana is "an outstanding new addition to Exmouth's eateries, offering a fresh approach to takeaway sandwiches and salads." He's a big fan of the daily specials – such as Devon Blue Cheese in a rustic roll with toasted walnuts and salad, dressed with gooseberry and elderflower chutney. Now there's posh...
