Heavy rain causes problems around Exmouth and across Devon

HEAVY RAIN has caused problems for drivers around Exmouth and across Devon, with some train services to London cancelled due to flooding near Tiverton and Exeter. The river Otter has burst its banks at Otterton, although there's no major flooding at the moment. There's an amber warning from the Met Office in force across the South West region until 4pm this afternoon, with the possibility of more heavy rain on the way...

Drivers have been warned of hazardous conditions after nearly a month's rain fell in 24 hours. Yesterday conditions were very challenging across many roads around Exmouth, with driving rain and heavy spray to contend with. Driving over Haldon Hill was especially bad last night, with low cloud greatly reducing visibility.

On the railways, South West Trains, Cross Country and First Great Western had to suspend services due to flooding.

The Environment Agency has issued flood warning on rivers in the Devon region, including the River Clyst from Broadclyst to Clyst St Mary and the River Lowman in Tiverton.

In addition there are flood alerts on the Rivers Creedy, Creedy Yeo, Little Dart, Lapford Yeo and their tributaries the River Otter, the River Sid and the Middle River Exe from Exebridge to Tiverton and the Rivers Haddeo, Batherm and Lowman. Levels are high on the River Otter, which has burst its banks at Otterton, although there's no major flooding at the moment.

The Environment Agency has strongly recommended that people stay safe by staying away from swollen rivers and not attempting to drive through floodwater. The Met Office has said that conditions are expected to improve later, although more rain may be on the way for Wednesday.
