TWO WOODEN memorial benches were recently spotted floating in the sea off Exmouth. They were brought ashore by members of the Exe Sailing Club.  Both benches are believed to have entered the water somewhere up the River Exe. The search is now on to find where they came from so that they can be returned...

Both benches have memorial plaques. The benches were dedicated as follows:

John Dobson, Bosun, Merchant Navy – died 1982 when the SS Atlantic Conveyor was attached during the Falklands war

Brian "Sheps" Sheppard – died 2006 – fondly remembered and missed by his friends from Exmouth, Honiton, Shirehampton and Avonmouth FC

The benches have been temporarily stored at the Exmouth Marina. Can you tell the Exe Sailing Club anything more about these benches? If so, contact Ted Draper on 013950 277428.

That's good news then. Hopefully the memorial benches will soon be restored to their proper place. Dreadful to hear of yet another piece of mindless vandalism around the town. The other week it was Createxe's mermaid and mermen trail down to the seafront that was vandalised. A completely pointless act, it was very insulting to those who put a lot of effort into these things...

Mike Vine at EDDC has contacted the Exe Sailing Club. He said that that the benches were ripped from their mountings on the sea front somewhere adjacent to the Cavendish hotel.

We have advised him that the benches are now in the care of the Harbour Master at Exmouth Marina. .

Mike was keen to send thanks to all concerned in the recovery.
