MOTORISTS ARE being warned of difficult driving conditions as ice affects many of Devon's roads this morning. As predicted, some snow has fallen overnight across the region. Light snow fell in Exmouth this morning and more may come later today. And, following a number of accidents on the A38 near Plymouth yesterday, a man has died. Police are appealing for witnesses...

Although Devon County Council's gritters and snowploughs have been in action all night, there are still icy conditions on many of the region's roads. Most major roads - including the North Devon Link road - are reported to be open. Snow is currently falling on Haldon Hill and Telegraph Hill, but two lanes are moving due to the work of snow ploughs. Drivers are being advised to take care on all of the region's roads.

Amber warning

Snow fell overnight, especially in North and East Devon. Exmouth escaped the worst of it, with very light snow falling, but not settling. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for more snow for the south west for today. It is likely that East Devon could be the worst hit.

Road accidents

Yesterday there were a series of accidents in icy conditions on the A38 near Plymouth. In the most major of the accidents, a man has died.

The accident occured at 05.48hrs on Tuesday 22 January when two vehicles collided on the on the A38 Parkway, eastbound between the Manadon off-slip and Forder Valley on-slip. The two vehicles involved in the collision were a Ford Fiesta and a Toyota Avensis. At the time of the collision the road surface was icy, following a hailstorm.

As a result of the collision the driver of the Ford Fiesta, a local male aged 42 years,  has died from his injuries. His next of kin have been informed. A specialist forensic investigation of the scene took place, resulting in the road being closed for ten hours.

Police from the  Plymouth Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses to this incident to contact them on Tel 101, quoting log number DCP – 20130122-0100
