AROUND 3,000 people attended a spectacular fireworks display last night at Bicton College, near Exmouth, to celebrate Bonfire Night 2012. Entertained by a samba band before the display, the crowd gathered around a huge bonfire to watch the impressive 20-minute display...

"We were really pleased with the event," said a college spokesperson. "We've had loads of good feedback about it. We've ve done displays for the past three or four years now, but I think last night was the biggest and best attended that we've had."

As well as the fireworks, there was hot food, including a hog roast, and music from the Blackdown Hills Samba Band. However there was no music during the display itself.

"We chose not to have music this year, but we've been talking about it for next year," said the college spokesperson. "The queues for the food were quite long, so we might have more food outlets next year. But overall, we were really pleased with the event."

The only minor niggle was that despite excellent marshalling on the entry points to the display, marshalling seemed practically non-existent when exiting. In addition, some vehicles struggled to cope with very muddy conditions on the fields provided for car parking. Several people had to push their vehicles out of mud slides.

"We didn't even know anyone had got stuck, to be honest," said the spokesperson. "We had tractors all around that would have been able to help pull people out."
