I love to go for walks in the grounds at Killerton at this time of year. Everything is so crisp and Christmassy. The house was open between 2pm - 4pm when I went last weekend, too. If you join National Trust, you get the benefit of being able to just turn up for a short walk whenever you fancy it, and I can recommend the delicious Homity Pie they serve in the cafe. They are also selling Christmas trees, plants, and the gift shop is ideal for last-minute Christmas presents.

A fabulous place to take the kids for a quick visit. They can dress up as a Regency lady or gentleman and there are free garden games to keep them occupied such as croquet, snakes and ladders - oh and wildlife brass rubbing. Lovely ice creams in the cafe, too. Killerton is also not very far away, and Compton Castle over near Paignton.

Exmouth is close to a number of really impressive National Trust houses (A La Ronde, Killerton, Knights Hayes, and the Forge at Branscombe). If you join, children under five are free and they are fabulous places to take the kids in the summer holidays, let them run off their energy in the gardens or have an adventure exploring the bear hut at Killerton House.
16 sided A La Ronde is different to anything I've seen before. It sits on a hill overlooking the Exe Estuary with wonderful views. The grounds are home to hundreds of butterflies and moths which absolutely love the wild flower meadow. Inside is the quaintest, most surprising house with items and momentos brought back from Europe by the owners, the Parminter cousins, Jane and Mary. There's a feather frieze and an amazing shell gallery, no longer accessible but you can see it on TV! What a place! There's a shop and a restaurant and art exhibitions throughout the season. Lovely.
