For a long time it seemed like the Book Rest was going to remain an undiscovered secret, known only to those intrepid souls prepared to venture through the small door at the rear of Best Books and up the steep stairs behind. That suited us – more space on the big comfy sofas with their views over the Strand below, and first dibs on the delicious Otterton Mill cakes and scones. Now it's always packed, and deservedly so, since news has spread of its splendid range of home cooked meals and snacks. It's a tremendous choice for families, with healthy children's meal choices (not a chip in sight) and a play area for the youngest ones. On our last visit we were with visitors aged from under 5 to over 60, and everyone was delighted with the food, service and ambience. Exmouth needs more places like this!

ReportI've been meaning to try The Book Rest for some time. It's been well worth the wait. Now well established as an above average, slightly upmarket café, its range of food is quite wide, there's an emphasis on home-cooked dishes, vegetarians are well catered for and the service is good. The food is excellent, with good attention to detail. Not only that, but there are nice comfy sofas to relax on after the meal, a childrens' area, and a terrific ambience. All round, ten out of ten!.
