THIS IS MADNESS! When are EDDC actually going to listen seriously to people in Exmouth who don't want a cafe on the Strand? The latest news is that a request for a referendum on the new building has been rejected, because, according to EDDC's chief executive, Mark Williams, the "request was invalid". There are many people in this town who do not want the cafe to go ahead on the Strand. Some think that the Tourist Infomation Centre would be much better placed there, and a new cafe built in the Manor Gardens where we desperately need a refreshments facility. What do others think? "Grapenut" is quite right. The whole affair is little short of scandalous. The suggestion of using the new building as a tourist information centre and converting the old tourist information office into a cafe is an excellent one, far more sensible than anything proposed by the council so far.

    Go for it Grapenut,

These people are supposed to represent our views not ignore us!
I don't know anybody who actually supports the plexiglass cafe nonsense, how
many cafes can the Strand take. Lets have the relocatedTourist Information Centre instead.
    You know it makes sense!!

The question of when will the council listen to the people? People are sick of the council? They are ordinary people doing a job representing the people, same with police, courts, government etc. If the people did not want them, they would not be in power, right? I had hundreds of thousands of pounds stolen because they knew nobody would help me and they were right, as long as others accept i will no longer help them, so get used to the cafe and all the other things you may not like and i will feel no shame in being a liar, thief, committing perjery in court and will never again cooperate with anybody. They asked me not to tar everybody with the same brush, but i do now until proved safe to trust them. With regards to the comment "you know it makes sense" i hope you never put trust in that it could be expensive for you.

I would never betray a confidence but will make an exception because the gentleman is deceased. The words of the boss, "We are the -------, we can do what we like, take as long as we like, charge what we like and ignore the law because we are the -------" About half a million pounds was stolen along with many more serious crimes for which they were going to be arrested but were not, big surprise. A local paper admitted they had been "spiked" and all the councillors admitted they had been ordered not to get involved. Ths is your lovely seaside town but who cares as long as they are not the victim?

Not everybody thinks this is a bad idea. Fact, exmouth needs lifting, fact, the new landscaping looks great and is getting more use than before.

The local cafes are struggling with the concept of a new centre but if they embraced it and raised their game, they may find that it actually attracts people in.

Exmouth cannot stay still or it will rot. Why does nobody complain about some of the bargain shops and their signage which destroys what is otherwise elegant architecture?

Can we start getting a balanced view before starting campaigns and the rest?

Good points Devonmilk. I agree that Exmouth needs to lift its game and attract more people to come and visit the town centre. But a larger café – in an area that already has Franklins, The Bayleaf, Michelle's, Strand Coffee House, Gossips, Shakers, Spoken and The Grapevine, let alone all the numerous takeaways – seems totally unnecessary, verging on OTT. What is currently missing on The Strand is a useful Tourist Information Centre and buzzy community building. On the other hand there's the Manor Gardens, one of the most beautiful jewels in Exmouth's crown, which visitors should certainly see and spend some time in. Number of cafés and restaurants within the park: nil. Number of Tourist Information Centres: one, and rather buried at that. I rest my case.

Interesting grapenut. I wonder if exmouth has ever taken the time to reconcile it's assets in order to pull together a cohesive marketing strategy.

For instance, IMHO, the greatest asset has to be the seafront as opposed to manor gardens. There are a number of local sports orientated businesses which are doing their own thing to relative levels of success but if co-ordinated better could put exmouth firmly on the map as a young place for water sports enthusiasts to everybodies benefit. Ok, that covers the summer months and again, manor gardens won't do anything for the winter so why not develop a coffee culture too?

As for the places you list, the majority could do with a face lift at least...maybe if this was realised, the need for a new venue could be discounted. Out of interest, would they also schedule events to make the most of the new centre, and with the exception of franklings, would any of them extend their terraces any further than their front window with appealing furniture. Perhaps they re their own worst enemy?!?

Some more interesting points from you Devonmilk. I agree with you that the town's greatest asset has to be the seafront. Definitely there's more that could be done here on the marketing side. The beach was the key theme of the recent Exmouth stand at the Devon County Show, so clearly some of the town's movers and shakers have got the message. Let's hope that more of them begin to realise that the beach and seafront are crucial to lifting the town's profile. We also have the planned developments towards Orcombe Point, flagging up the start of the Jurassic Coast, so that will be interesting to see how it develops. Unfortunately one of the biggest problems on the seafront at the moment is the bowling alley, which seems to have completely stalled. Half-built and looking like it will never be finished, it's an utter eyesore. Perhaps demolition could be the best option there! As for the businesses around The Strand, I think gradually they are coming to terms with the new pedestrianized area and the possibilities it offers. It is the first summer with the new-look Strand, so let's see what they come up with...
