I was amused to hear the report about Exmouth being 14th to bottom of the Clone Towns in the UK - beating Exeter, the worst Clone Town! What does it mean? Towns that just have the same shops as other towns, making them indistinguisable. A Home Town, on the other hand, is one that 'retains its individual character and is instantly recognisable and distinctive.' I have to say, I don't really understand how Crediton has managed to come 11th from top though! I think it's dull as dishwater. At least Exmouth is trying to be different. Town Centre Tony Collins is doing a fantastic job and there are new and independent shops opening on Albion Street etc. If we could just do something to improve the Magnolia Centre though - it's no good just improving the roads around the town centre. The Magnolia Centre is the heart of the town and it's just Somerfield - Boots - WH Smith - Dorothy Perkins - Blockbuster etc. It would be nice to have some independent, character shops in the heart of town. We should enter the clone war!

Totally agree. I'm getting completely fed up with all the characterless shopping options in our towns and cities :-(

Perhaps some good may come out of this recession with soulless chain stores closing down and the independent shopkeeper rising up from the ashes... like a phoenix from the flames!
