Budleigh's Beach Hut Blur

Local residents in Budleigh Salterton are expressing unhappy with the tunnel of beach huts scarring the face of the seafront this summer.

The beach huts used to look charming but are now an eyesore!
Charming as they may look to visitors, locals who use the pathway from Lime Kiln car park regret that they have to now walk through a tightly packed tunnel that blocks sea views and makes the air hot and sticky, as it is trapped between the cliffs and the fence of huts.
The happy huts may earn the local council a tidy sum of £600 per plot but the effect is that they create an eyesore for locals and visitors alike who appreciate the open sea views and fresh air Budleigh is known for.
The EDDC website states that there are 49 council-owned beach huts and 94 sites, available between April 1 and September 30. Privately owned huts may be erected on beach sites after April 1 and must be removed before October 31.
With 500 people still on the waiting list for their own hut, is Budleigh set to follow suit to sea fronts like Exmouth and those over in Torbay? It doesn’t fit in with the town’s gentile atmosphere., surely?

I must admit I find the beach huts quite attractive and 'oldyworldy', but I hadn't really stopped to think about them from this point of view - I can see what people mean. I would certainly say there are more than enough there now and it would be a pity to add any more. It is a little bit like foreign resorts where they errect lots of high rise hotels and then spoil the very thing that visitors find beautiful and come for. More huts might bring in more revenue for the local council, but I think they would lose more than they gain if they increase the huts - I would say reduce the number.
