The first Arts Cafe run by creative group Createxe was well attended on Saturday (19 March 2011) Rob Seymour (half of the popular Billycocks) sang, accompanied by both mandoline and guitar. Dan Desmond sang some of his self-penned songs and a couple of covers. Noel Harrower, Jenny Johnson and John Gibbon read their own poetry. About ten visual artists showed their work, mainly on the theme of Spring.

Michelle Wilkinson + installation
Michelle Wilkinson created an installation from natural materials gathered from the ground at Bystock Ponds and provided an opportunity for visitors to try working with found materials. Neil Rogers showed and sold his designer woodturning. Tricia Cassel-Gerard was showing and selling her needlefelted brooches. There were lots of different cards available to buy, produced by Exmouth-based artists and photographers. Home made cakes and a range of drinks served by a friendly team of volunteers rounded off the experience.
Comments
Thank you, Arts Cafe, for providing something Exmouth has been missing for a long time – a congenial space to meet, chat and enjoy visual and performing arts while relaxing with a cup of that delicious beverage that refreshes (but does not inebriate).
The breadth of creative talent in Exmouth is truly staggering, but like an iceberg, much remains below the surface. His Lordship and myself suspect that there are probably more closet artists per square inch in this town than anywhere else in the UK! We desperately need a venue like this where artists of all disciplines and levels of experience are able to meet one another, exchange ideas and inspiration, and share their work with a wider audience.
In my opinion, it is shameful that Exmouth lacks a dedicated Arts Centre, so it is wonderful that the Arts Cafe has stepped into the breach. HL and I congratulate all involved and eagerly anticipate the next event.
