With the opening of the new Strand development imminent, the Mayor of Exmouth has asked for the town's annual Christmas Cracker event to be the best and biggest ever.

This year will include an extension to the main Friday evening party, with an ice rink and kids' fun fair in the Strand for the three days around the launch. It's sounding like Exmouth's getting its own German-style Christmas Market.

There will be over 50 stalls this year, decked with Christmas lighting and displaced in a way so as to use the new space to best effect. There will be fireworks on a large, professional stage, a nativity scene, and plenty of entertainers, including a Hollywood star.

The design and management of the stalls is being handled by Kim Roper, a local lady with a passion for bringing a much more festive feel to this part of the show.

Tony Collins, Exmouth's Town Centre Manager said: "This is a chance to bring thousands of people in to the town, and with the promotion of the event being even more widely spread this year, it could be huge."

For more information on stalls, contact Kim Roper on  01395 266759 or for general information call Tony Collins on 01395 276167 or email townmanager@exmouth.gov.uk.

Do you have any suggestions for how to make the best of this one-off opportunity to launch the new Strand area? Are there things about previous Christmas Cracker events that you wouldn't want to see repeated?

Based on the picture from the Strand webcam the event looks like it has drawn a large crowd! Well done! (I'll tell my brothers about it - it might get them into the town centre tomorrow for the first time to see what has happened to The Strand.

I agree. Last year's was a total disappointment. I made an effort to go in to town because I saw it advertised on this website, and I thought it would get me in to the Christmas spirit. I went to a Christmas craft fair and then thought I'd go in to town. I swore I wouldn't go again this year. Is it REALLY going to be bigger and better than ever? It wouldn't take much to be better, but is it going to be worth leaving the house for on a dark December night?! Someone convince me, please! I hope this isn't just some marketing talk. I suppose it depends on your understanding of what makes an impressive party. I've lived and worked in Germany/Austria and think they always do it well. And so much better than Exmouth has so far!!!!

I found last year's Christmas Cracker a bit of a wet weekend to be honest - not much of an atmosphere to speak of. I think it's going to take A LOT of work to make this year worthy of opening the new Strand area. Don't get me wrong - I am all in favour of anything that's going to bring more interest to the town, but please, please, please don't advertise it as something better than it is - otherwise people will just feel let down and they won't bother in future. I am happy to give it another chance but I do hope there really is some kind of atmosphere and plenty to see. The ice rink does sound good. That's more like a German market. When is the launch?
