Exmouth Carnival 2010 route "a complete disaster"

AN EXMOUTH CARNIVAL organizer is describing the 2010 route as “a complete disaster”. The shortened procession circuit has been blamed for throwing the carnival into chaos. And the Procession Coordinator says he’s so angry that he intends to pull out of future Exmouth Carnivals.

The shortened carnival route – due to The Strand improvement works – created overcrowding in the town on Saturday 9 October. The Parade was particularly packed, with people spilling into the road to see the event. The atmosphere seemed tense too, not helped by the claustrophobic crowd conditions. But the new route’s main failing was at the Marine Way roundabout, the start and finish point for this year's Carnival.
At about 8.20pm the front of the procession arrived at the roundabout to complete the Carnival circuit, only to discover that the parade's final floats hadn’t left yet. Consequently the procession slowed up and gradually ground to a halt, not helped when two large floats lost their generator power.
Things were especially chaotic near the KFC at the Marine Way roundabout where organizers split the procession into two groups to disperse it. Large floats and vehicles were sent to the left of the roundabout while smaller groups and individuals were sent to the right. But although the dispersal procedure may have been clear to the organizers, it confused and angered the public.
"This year's carnival was a complete disaster route-wise," said Rob Waller, the Procession Co-Coordinator. "I will not do another Exmouth Carnival again. I understand that the public are angry. It was too short a route. Once both ends of the procession had joined up near the KFC on the roundabout, there wasn’t anywhere for them to go. Then there were some technical problems with two of the large floats losing their generator power. But they did ever so well to keep going and complete the circuit.”
It’s currently unclear how much money was raised for charitable causes. The figure is likely to be confirmed in a few days’ time.
