Exmouth's bowling alley back on track... but do we believe it?

EXMOUTH'S multi-million pound seafront bowling alley and leisure complex is back on track, according to local press reports. Apparently construction work is due to begin again in the next few weeks and it's hoped that the facility – which is to include a bowling alley, ice rink, three restaurants, small shops, a play zone for under-12s, and function rooms – could be ready by Christmas 2011.

But do we believe the news? We've been here many, many times before, and the history of this controversial building – possibly Exmouth's biggest white elephant – has turned into an enormously drawn out and very sorry saga (see background).

  • If work does begin again on the bowling alley, are you happy that we are going to have yet more noise and disruption on the seafront during the season?
  • If it is finished by Christmas 2011, it will have taken nearly four years to complete. Is that acceptable?
  • And, once the bowling alley is built, where are all the attraction's visitors going to park their cars?

Am I being old (ish) and cynical if I say that I don't believe them ?
Smacks of keeping the critics and wolves at bay to me.
It would be wonderful to get it finished though. I would have preferred an open air pool, but a finished bowling complex would be a great improvement on the current semi derelict eyesore.
Of yes, good point about car parking, but there are two carparks that end of town within
acceptable walking distance. Residents with free on street parking areas need to start worrying though, particularly Trefusis terrace.

This building - which few seem to want - has been nothing but trouble right from the start. The delays have been unacceptable, and the building has been left in limbo for far too long. So it's good news that it may finally be finished and we can see if it was really worth the wait. One thing's for certain: when it is finished it will be completely out of all proportion and character with everything else along Exmouth's seafront. What with the bowling alley and the proposed two-storey glass building on the Strand, Exmouth is rapidly turning into Milton Keynes On Sea. Not good...

Another summer of disruptive building work to get a complex nobody wanted in the first place? The developers have already shown an absolute disregard for seafront residents by first working on the complex at unacceptable hours (in one case, after 11pm!), then raising the height of the structure to obstruct their views still further, and finally by abandoning this half-finished eyesore in front of their properties. Here's an idea: raise the wretched thing to the ground and give us back our open-air swimming pool!
