Despite the recession, Curves in Exmouth is investing in the arts, responding to a call by London Mayor Boris Johnson for firms to support the sector.

Curves is bucking the national trend, choosing to sponsor the production of Hey Baby! – a play written by a Purbeck author and performed by an award-winning South West company, AsOne, based on the real experiences of women in the south west.  Hey Baby! can be seen on Saturday 31 October at the Blackmore Theatre, Exmouth at  7.30pm (Tickets 01395 222299).

Local businesswoman Andrea Huxley is clear why she is being supportive of Hey Baby! saying: "Curves is a woman-centric organisation with nearly 300 female members. The play is about women of different ages looking for support and all with a story to tell. It's a good fit.

"It made sense for us to invest in a local production and I wanted to support a new play which explores themes so central to the lives of women in the south west.

"The theatre company is a business - just like ours - and I believe that businesses should support each other where they can - especially in a recession."

That's a view echoed by London Mayor Boris Johnson, who said recently: "Arts and culture are not a luxury. At a time of recession it is more important than ever to invest in the arts."

Hey Baby! is written by Nell Denton and is a multi-media, emotional roller-coaster based on real bitter-sweet experiences of their journey into parenthood from 'troubled teen', to 'romantically-planned' to 'last-chance couple'. Nell has created a magical piece of story-telling interwoven by breathtaking images underscored by a new suite of music from the talented Dorset composer, Simon Swarbrick, evoking Baby's story.

Hey Baby! is touring the south west: Curves team will take a collection for the charity Breast Cancer Care at the Blackmore Theatre.

This sounds like a great evening - I can't go along myself, so hope that someone will post a review of the performance.  Hopefully it will also raise much needed funds for Breast Cancer Care.  I feel Boris Johnson is right - it would be so easy to ignore the arts in these difficult financial times, but that would make us all the poorer.  Well done Curves.

It's good to see businesses supporting each other in this way in these hard times.
