INSURANCE- A NECESSARY EVIL? OR NOT...

Having just received my car insurance renewal I was shocked to find it had gone up by £90 - a massive 39% increase.

Considering I've made no claims and have had no convictions in the past year I find this pretty hard to take.

So, looking around, I've just found fully comp cover (the previous cover was 3rd party, fire & theft) for £50 less than the renewal quote from my original insurer.

I know little about insurance other than it's 'big business and certainly BIG money' and based upon my recent experience that's certainly true.

They lure you in with intial offers, then, a year later, quote you a far-fetched renewal on the basis that you'll be too busy too investigate other options. Sure, there'll always be some whose circumstances will mean they will balk at the increase but based on the general knowledge in the world of finance, word is that the majority of Brits will meekly pay up because we're either too lazy or too busy.

You just have to count the number of websites out there that offer insurance price comparisons. Out of the goodness of their heart?  Call me cynical but  probably not.

Get on confused.com or any of the others and put in your details.  The  quotes range from the sublime to the ridiculous.  With over £300 difference between the cheapest/most expensive that's not a general

' margin of error, more an 'eye on the main chance'.

I've got a couple of Barratt Sherbert Dabs (in the original cardboard tubes( (still edible/suckable/dippable)  but no longer produced due to H&S regulations ) as a prize for the most disparate quote!

I heard in the news that insurance is going up for car policies because of the rising number of uninsured young drivers - they're put off by the costs that can be anything up to £2,000, and don't realise that if they have an accident, it pushes everyone else's premiums up. Something like 1 in 5 young drivers isn't insured...

Whilst I empathise with you regarding motor insurance costs, I really don't feel that it'sworth putting finger to keyboard for, just to let us know that you have the common sense to shop around for a cheaper quote.

One or two points that I would like to make is that the cheapest quote is not necessarily the best quote. And secondly are you comparing 'like for like' when you say how much you have saved? Or are you subject to an increased excess, now have a reduced mileage insurance etc etc.

The above is purely rhetorical as I am not particularly interested in getting into a debate about your premium. I hope you have fun using the savings you have made paying for rising fuel costs, service costs etc etc
