GIVE 'PEACE' or 'PIECE' A CHANCE !
WHICH IS 'RIGHT' OR 'WRITE'?
Recently, in the children's corner of a museum, I overheard a parent explaining to her child, who was sitting writing, the difference between 'here' and 'hear', and 'which' and 'witch'.
Most children leaving primary school will know that words that sound the same but are spelt differently, and have a different meaning, are called HOMOPHONES. The Greek prefix to the word means 'the same'.
Yet even my MA level students occasionally lapse into confusion!
Here is a list of the most commonly confused homophones:
There, their, they're - Where, wear
Our, are - Piece, peace
Whether, weather - Allowed, aloud
Pear, pair - Caught, court
One, won - To, too, two
Which, witch - whole, hole
Would, wood - through, threw
Write, right - heal, heel
Here, hear - bored, board
See, sea - plain, plane
Saw, sore.
Can you think of any more?
