Bird lovers across Devon are being asked to take part in this years Big Garden Birdwatch, on the 30th-31st January.

Last year saw more than 13,000 people in Devon get involved, the biggest number since the survey began. For the last 30 years supporters have been asked to count the number of birds in their gardens and each year some 6 million birds are spotted nationally. The 280,000 gardens surveyed last year helped create a snapshot of bird numbers in each region, with sparrows coming out as the most common in Devon.

Also highlighted are the disappearing birds, with the starling facing a dramatic drop. It’s hoped with the continuation of Birdwatch, steps can be taken to help aid a recovery.

During the months, birds visit our gardens more, as they are looking for food and shelter, making this the perfect time to view our winter visitors. The time of day you do your survey doesn’t matter, as long as you set aside an hour to help. Don’t worry if you don’t see anything, as all results count and help build the bigger picture!

As well as the serious side, the project is aimed at being fun! The Big Schools’ Birdwatch is already underway and is open to all ages. You can do your birdwatch at school, or maybe by visiting a local park?

For those in the region that want to find out more before taking part, pay a visit to the RSPB shop at Darts Farm Topsham, over the coming weekend.

I took part in this last year and found it really interesting - it was also a good excuse to sit and watch the birds for an hour!  I was surprised to see from Pedigree Chum's report that sparrows were the most common bird in Devon gardens as I don't seem to see so many of them now - as a child I remember the garden being full of flocks of them.  You can also find out more on the RSPB website.
