The 10th-11th October saw the
2009 Commando Challenge take place. The event, which is run by the Royal
Marines at Lympstone, is a popular charity event, attracting entrants from all
over the country.
The weekend saw a 4k run on Saturday, followed by the
muddy and challenging 10k marine challenge on Sunday. An incredible 4,000
applicants took part in 800 teams. Event organiser Alan Hardy told the Express
and Echo, “They have to negotiate mud, tunnels and all the elements that the
marines face as part of their training.”
Now in its 17th year, the weekend aims to
raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance and The Royal British Legion Poppy
Appeal. It is estimated this years event has raised over £300,000!
“Royal Marines are the living embodiment of their
Commando ethos: courage, determination, selflessness and cheerfulness in the
face of adversity” said Lieutenant Colonel J Marox, the Royal Marines
Commanding Officer. “The Commando Challenge is a fantastic way of exposing one
of our tests to the public.”
It would be great to hear from anybody that took part in the event – and
to see pictures taken from the weekend. Mud and all!

This looks like a lot of good fun but, wow, 4k run... dressed like that?! They look fantastic. One of my friends tried to get a few of us to do this from a nearby village, but I'm too unfit! I guess it takes a lot of training and preparation!
