Whether you are a smoker yourself, or have friends and family that smoke, we can all appreciate how hard it is to give up the dreaded nicotine. As hard as it must be, a little motivation seems to go a long way.

So what better motivation than national No Smoking Day!

Some might be surprised to hear that in Devon, six people die every day from smoking related illnesses. That’s an incredible figure that should make us all take notice!

Dr Virginia Pearson, NHS Devon’s director of public health said, ‘We are delighted to support No Smoking Day and hope many people in Devon will use this as the first step to quit cigarettes. Stopping smoking is the single best thing you can do to improve your health.’ What better motivation can there be!

‘Half of all people who use their local NHS stop smoking service are not smoking four weeks later. Smokers can get the help they need through a range of health professionals including specialist health trainers and advisors, and through GP surgeries and pharmacies,’ Dr Pearson added.

If you are serious about taking the next step to quitting cigarettes for the good of yourself and those around you, NHS Devon runs stop smoking clinics in all areas of of the county, with free confidential, one-to-one advice.
