Swishing comes to Exmouth!

Swishing is a clothes swap with a party attached. We all love fabulous news clothes but not the unfortunate side effects. Our bank managers don’t understand the importance of shiny new shoes, and buying heaps of new stuff is pretty terrible for the planet. What’s a girl to do?

Come to a Swishing party in Exmouth, that's what - or host one yourself! If you’d like to get together with likeminded ladies and run a Swap n

Swish party, connect on Exmouth People. You could run one for charity, too!

Swishing is shopping without the hangovers. We all bring nice, clean, presentable clothes that are lurking unloved in our wardrobe, and other girls fall in love with them and give them a good home. You might bring one sweater and take two pairs of shoes or hang a party frock on the ‘Swishing Rail’ and take a pair of skinny jeans and feather boa.

Women and girls have swapped clothes for eons and the success of eBay shows that women will happily bid for some else’s cast-offs. But that costs, and swishing is free.

The rules are:

1.    You must bring at least one item of quality clothing.

2.    You will have half an hour to browse before the swish opens

3.    No item may be claimed before the swish opens

4.    As soon as the swish is declared open, everyone may take what they want

5.    Remember, no scratching, spitting or fighting

It brings together ethical shopping, bargain hunting and social networking – and it’s the hottest fashion trend. Jess Cartner-Morley of Marie Claire said, “It’s the latest craze sweeping the country. Welcome to the future of fashion!”

Clothes swapping is a consumer experience for the credit-crunch period. In August and September, Swish ‘n Swap is taking place twice in Bristol, and there are other events in Peterborough, London, Chester, Birmingham and Hampshire.  Watch this space - I think we'll have one in Exmouth very, very soon!

I went to a friend's 'swishing' party in South London a while back - but I didn't realise that was what it was called!  It was really good - but it didn't make any wardrobe space, as I brought back almost as many items as I took.  There were some really nice clothes on offer and  it was nice to have some new clothes without any financial outlay for a change.  It would be great to have something like this locally.

"Swishing is shopping without the hangovers." - is this your admission to being an alcoholic Amy? Too much time spent in Threshers methinks!

Red ginger, I agree about the font colour being too pale - I highlight txt using the mouse swipe, then it can be seen more easily

We're looking into venues. If you're a new mum, would you be interested in a clothes swap lunch in town? A chance to clear your wardrobe and get some new bits and pieces while preparing to get back in shape?!

What an excellent idea. I'm going to tell my wife straight away. She might just clear me some space in the wardrobe. Oh, but then she'd be going there to swap, wouldn't she! Well at least it means no bill at the end of the shopping spree. No pain in my wallet...
