Why on earth has Tescos' been allowed to have a 3rd outlet in Exmouth?

What happened to Asda and all that they were going to bring to our Town? They were made to jump through so many hoops that they got fed up in the end and didn't bother. Then, within months we have a completely inappropriate use of the ex job centre as another supermarket!

Have the powers that be not considered how supplies will be unloaded at the new outlet? Can they not see Rolle Street being blocked or even more congested or have Tescos bought the parking spaces outside as well?

If they want to unload around the rear the there is simply no room to do so unless the cafe 1/4 is to be removed or reduced to a cafe 1/16th!

We already have late night outlets at both ends of Rolle St. with Summerfields camped in the middle of the town. Why more??

My prediction is that Tesco will see the demise of both outlets in Rolle St. bringing about redundancies and business closure, and that Summerfields will lay staff off or have to close altogether. Then I can see Tesco moving into those premises to continue their quest for world domination!!

tesco are destroying every town and village but it isnt their fault, it is the people who shop there and give them business. i refuse to shop there because of ethical values but you can only blame the people who shop at tesco for the amount of stores they are building. what a shame about the tesco that is being built in seaton, it will ruin the town.

I was surprised to hear Tesco are opening up in town. What happened to the proposed extension of the Salterton Road store into a hypermarket - buying up adjoining land etc? This seems to have gone by the board since Asda and the chance of improved roads and a new leisure centre were run out of town.  In my experience if a new Asda had been approved  Tesco would have been kept in their place and the attraction to the town Asda would have created would have enhanced rather than harmed the genuinely good shops in town. Too many places have become ghost towns because they were afraid of change and competition - people will go out of town to shop!!

I notice that several people have said that competition is good but who is challenging Tesco? do they have any competition in Exmouth NO! I think that this town has a BIG problem with Tesco in that as a company they do not have a national pricing policy. This means that they can charge what they think the local area will pay, so with no competition as such within the town they charge us as customers more. Every time that I have to go to the Tesco store on the Salterton road, which is out of desperation, I find that the produce is not of a very good quality, that is if they have what I require in the first place. Most people want cheap food but do they think of how large supermarket chains manage to sell things so cheap and still manage to make huge profits. Well the economics of this means that these large companies are forcing down the price that they pay for there products from there suppliers i.e. farmers and manufacturers, this has a knock on effect of low product quality as well as the possibility of low wages for the people that these suppliers employ. So come on Exmouth support your local independent shops who offer a great range of products.

I agree with everything that has siad so far!  Our lovely little town is becoming a dying ghost town.  Tesco is taking over we need something different to bring people back to the town.  Somerfield is a nightmare and needs the competition but with another chain although i do feel for the staff at somerfield they deserve a medal!  Tesco will own Exmouth soon if something is not done!!

This really is a national problem now - I heard something on the news this week suggesting that in future planners might have to turn down applications for more than one of the same store in a town, and even that the number of large stores might be restricted.  I didn't catch it all, but it sounded like a step in the right direction.  I hope 1voice manages to fight off the competition.
