I don't know what happened with the previous two reviewers, but I have been to Avant's three times now with my family and friends. The food is superb, the welcome is very friendly and I love it ! Go try it yourselves, it's worth the effort. At under £10 the two course fixed price menu is a joy - the salmon was lovely & the mushroom starter terrific.

Avanti restaurant in Exmouth. What a disaster we booked a table for myself and husband . On arrival the waitress who was like a hyperactive looked puzzled neurotict and sat us at a table that wasnt even set up so no point in booking. We ordered prawns which werent seasoned and I had fried mozarella with a tasteless tomato sauce which I seasoned myself with lemon salt and pepper. For the main course my husband orderd mussels with GARLIC AND CREAM and I ordered the vegetarian canelloni with sinach and ricotta. The bread for the Mussels came out BEFORE the stater. The mussels had NO CREAM OR GARLIC there was just some white wine at the bottom. MY canelloni was absolutely appalling. The ricotta had curdled and slpit and look like a bowl of SICK with 2 pices of pasta swimming in what was the most disgusting sauce I have ever tasted, I had no salad with it and no spinach inside, but the bowl of mussels came with a piece of lettuce, why bother, you dont serve salad with mussels! but it would have been nice with the pasta. We complianed abouth the mussels and the waitress and owner Donato came over and he started telling the waitress of at our table and it wasnt the chefs fault and he would have put cream if he had known. What a lousy excuse and unprofessional. The other waiter young lad was a slimy creep and when removed our starters asked us "was it niiiice?" like some lurch from the Adams family. We hardly had time to swallow our starters and the mains arrived no time to sit and relax like the Italian way, all rush rush. Lurch removed my main course platewhich was still full as I didn't eat it and didnt even ask if if it "was niice" Overall SERVICE WAS SH*T- FOOD WAS SH*T - PRESENTATION WAS SH*T-. HE is an insult to Italian and even more insulting to British people for fobbing us of that that is authentic Italian food . Donato should be ashamed of himself and the awful reputation he is going to get. Get yourself a PROFESSIONAL CHEF and decent waiting staff or you wont be in business very long.
Recently opened + owned by Donato,my wife and I had high hopes for a lovely evening meal, sadly the whole experience could not be further from the truth. Despite booking + speaking to Donato, on arrival it was clear that we had not been booked in.A table was positioned at the back of the restaurant for us and it was clear that couples are not the best customers prefering the large groups. Donato took the order with no offer of specials, my wife asking for a smaller portion but this was refused. A shared starter came out wrong with 45 mins for cheese and cold meats to be served. Overpriced and only a token effort on presentation. Left for 30 mins with dirty plates on the table and were only removed when we got up to pay the bill,no thank you or goodbye on departure from any staff least of all Donato. Exmouth resident for 15 yrs we will not visit again and there are better places to and spend money on in Exmouth. Not recommended
