Good, but variable experiences

Some of my friends rate The Mexican a lot, but I've had variable experiences here. I've had three or four meals, some better than others. Fresh local mussels cooked in white wine, cream, chili and garlic sauce were reasonable, but some may find them too fiery for their tastes. I'm unclear if they're using Exe Mussels or not. The mussels I've had were a little on the smallish side, which may indicate that while they are local, they may not be Exe Mussels. The Combo Por Dos - with a wide mix including BBQ chicken wings, ribs, jalapeno stuffed peppers - is a good bet if you're not sure what to have. Offering a reasonable selection, it's a good introduction to Mexican food. And the Mexican burger - plain or topped with cheese or jalapenos, is fairly reliable. The staff are OK, the decor is fun and lively (although a little cramped in certain areas) and the ambience is generally good. So if you're up for Mexican food, give it a try, but you may find better quality food - and value - elsewhere around the town.
