HUNDREDS of little heroes arrived for school and it was more than their superpowers that were tested.
The event took place at Bassetts Farm Primary School in Exmouth yesterday.
The Heroes and Superheroes Day was the culmination of seven weeks of learning based on the theme.
All 310 pupils dressed up, either as superheroes such as Batman, Spiderman, and the Power Rangers, or as modern-day heroes such as doctors, nurses, soldiers or people the children admire for their contribution to the world.
Bassetts Farm headteacher Sarah Bennett said: “Heroes and Superheroes has been a really engaging learning journey for the children. They have got an awful lot out of it and they have had a lot of fun as well.”
The pupils have learned how various people have made an impact on the world in different ways.
They have looked at key figures throughout history, such as Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and inventors who have left a lasting legacy.
Firefighters, police officers and Guide Dogs for the Blind have paid visits to the school in St John’s Road to talk about the role they play in society.
The children wrote stories, comics and newspaper articles, and some even designed their own animations, during their studies before half-term.
They presented what they had learned to parents in a school assembly.
The pupils who had worked on an animation, and made characters out of modelling clay or play bricks, showed their films to their classmates.
Some pupils designed the costumes they wore to the heroes and superheroes day. They gave a presentation to the rest of their class and talked about their superpowers.
The school’s kitchen team prepared a lunch fit for superheroes, consisting of food that would give them energy and strength.
This included healthy, home-made burgers, and superhero biscuits.
Mrs Bennett added: “It’s a treat for the whole school to be dressing up, and it’s a nice way to end the half-term.
“We only dress up if it gives something to the children’s learning.”
She said heroes and superheroes had definitely been one of the most popular projects for the children.
The “learning journey” got off to a start with a production of Robin Hood.
Previous themes have included Life on the Ocean Waves, and Be Inspired which focused on Exmouth’s past, present and future.
The next themes will be merry-go-round, which is about using forces and the history of fairgrounds, and then Guinness world records.
