More than 50 Lympstone residents, aged six to over 60, turned out in the rain this morning to support a special football match on the Cliff Field, to commemorate the life of Boney, David Stone and play for a new cup, The Boney Trophy.

Mr Stone was fondly known as 'Mr Lympstone'. He died in December last year, aged 67. Members of his family attended the match and presented a bench in his name. The bench will be erected on the Cliff Field. Boney, David Stone, was associated with Lympstone Football Club for more than five decades.

Lympstone first team dominated the game, to go on and win 4 –1. The game saw one father and son play against each other and the veterans did manage to get one goal back before the final whistle blew.

Lympstone Football Club captain, Ben Canning, has taken over Boney's groundsman's duties and was there to accept the cup for the winning side from Mrs Stone.

Chris Gooding, the club chairman, who lives in Exmouth, said: "It's great to see Ben there captaining the team that he used to watch from the sidelines as a young boy. Many of the veterans were players he had supported in his youth."
